Praying for my children makes me feel safe

We live in a world where so much evil abides. Every day we hear stories of children being raped, kidnapped, shot and killed. We wonder if it’s safe to let them out of the house. While we cannot hide our children away from the world we can shield them in much greater ways than keeping them locked in the house. You and I can pray. We can intercede for our children, praying for strength, wisdom, protection and peace. Author Mark Batterson wrote, “If you determine to circle your children in prayer, you will shape their destinies….your prayers will live on in their lives, long after you are dead.” In fact, this is what God called us to do, to intercede for one another.

Children bring us immense joy and a sense of purpose ……and they can frustrate us as well!! They may actually be what gets us up each morning (metaphorically or literally speaking)!

Psalm 127 v 3 Behold children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward.

This is one of my favourite verses when it comes to children. They are a reward, a blessing. So there is no better place than to look to God for guidance. In the Bible we read about Hannah and how she yearned to have her own child. Today so many women are crying; seeking that reward. So why then do we not protect that reward in the best way possible? Yes, I’m talking about prayer.

How often do we pray for our children? How do we pray for our children? In my book I talk about praying together. That includes praying with my children. Take note, praying with, not just praying for my children. Involve them in prayer. Let them know that they can talk to God directly, whenever, wherever. Teach them how to pray and show them the importance of having a relationship with God. The Bible says in Proverbs 22 v 6- Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The Book of Job encourages me and teaches me a lot about praying for my children. And it is one of the books where I got the name for my last born, Jemimah, the most beautiful girl in the land.

Job : 1 : 5 – And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
